Keanu Reeves Talks The Plot Of Bill & Ted’s Third Adventure

I’ve got a good feeling about the promised third Bill & Ted film. So does Keanu Reeves, it would seem. Which is nice, seeing as he’s going to be in it and all.
Talking to GQ to promote his new documentary Side by Side, an interrogation into the transition from analog to digital filmmaking, Reeves was also called upon to talk Bill & Ted business.
The film has yet to get a green light, but here’s something of the “nice story” that Reeves believes will generate interest:
"One of the plot points is that these two people have been crushed by the responsibility of having to write the greatest song ever written and to change the world. And they haven’t done it. So everybody is kind of like: “Where is the song?”
The guys have just drifted off into esoterica and lost their rock. And we go on this expedition, go into the future to find out if we wrote the song, and one future “us” refuses to tell us, and another future “us” blames us for their lives because we didn’t write the song, so they’re living this terrible life."
In one version we’re in jail; in another we’re at some kind of highway motel and they hate us.
The parallel futures of Bill & Ted, all of them seemingly stricken with a touch of mid-life crisis. This could be really good…
I wonder how many alternate futures there are going to be? Reeves mentions two, but then there was already the evil robots from before and, well, I wouldn’t be surprised to see many more.
Hopefully the film will get going soon enough. I know there’s an audience for it.

Shoes made of Human Skin

Big Nose George

Towards the end of the 1800s, many outlaws emerged in the American West. One of these criminals was named Big Nose George Parrott. In 1878, Parrott and his gang murdered two law enforcement officers in the US state of Wyoming.
In 1880, after getting drunk and boasting of the killings, the men were apprehended and Big Nose George was sentenced to hang on April 2, 1881, following a trial, but he attempted to escape while being held at a Rawlins, Wyoming jail. When news of the attempted escape reached the people of Rawlins, a 200-strong lynch mob snatched George from the prison at gunpoint and strung him up from a telegraph pole. Doctors Thomas Maghee and John Eugene Osborne took possession of Parrott’s body after his death, in order to study the outlaw’s brain for signs of criminality. During these procedures, the top of Parrott’s skull was crudely sawn off and the cap was presented to a 15-year-old girl named Lilian Heath. Heath would go on to become the first female doctor in Wyoming, and is noted to have used Parrott’s skull as an ash tray, pen holder and doorstop.
Skin from George’s thighs, chest and face was removed. The skin, including the dead man’s nipples, was sent to a tannery in Denver, where it was made into a pair of shoes and a medical bag. The shoes were kept by John Eugene Osborne, who wore them at his inaugural ball after being elected as the first Democratic Governor of the State of Wyoming. Parrott’s dismembered body was stored in a whiskey barrel filled with a salt solution for about a year, while the experiments continued, until he was buried in the yard behind Maghee’s office. Today the shoes created from the skin of Big Nose George are on permanent display at the Carbon County Museum in Rawlins, Wyoming, together with the bottom part of the outlaw’s skull and George’s earless death mask.

A previous post I made about anthropodermic bibliopegy can be found HERE.

Bizarre rock 'ice shelf' found in Pacific

A huge cluster of floating volcanic rocks covering almost 26,000 square kilometres (10,000 square miles) has been found drifting in the Pacific, the New Zealand navy said Friday.
The strange phenomenon, which witnesses said resembled a polar ice shelf, was made up of lightweight pumice expelled from an underwater volcano, the navy said.
An air force plane spotted the rocks on Thursday about 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) offshore from New Zealand and warned a navy warship that it was heading towards them.

World’s Most Expensive Nail Polish: One Bottle Is $250,000

 By:Diana Adams

World’s most expensive nail polish with 267 carats of diamonds

What is the most you’ve ever paid for a bottle of nail polish? I think the most I’ve ever paid is probably around twenty dollars, but that was on a rare occasion for a limited-edition color. If you’ve ever wondered how much the world’s most expensive bottle of nail polish costs, I’m about to shock you. Yep, you read the title right, it’s $250,000! Can you imagine paying a quarter of a million dollars for nail polish? That polish would have to get up and polish my nails itself (and give me a foot massage) for that price. Nah, I’m sure there are a few people in the world who would be happy to pay that price just to be able to say they owned the world’s most expensive nail polish.
This is called Black Diamond Nail Polish and there is more in the bottle than just luxurious, rich polish. There are also actual black diamonds. To be exact, there are 267 carats of black diamonds in this one bottle. Anyone who wears this polish will look like sparkling royalty. Also, to make this even more special, you should know that only one bottle of this will ever be produced. It’s a one of a kind experience.
This beautiful polish was created by luxury jeweler Azature. As you might expect, there will also be some copycat budget versions of this polish which will sell for about $25. The world’s most expensive nail polish ever created before this one was the Gold Rush Couture Polish introduced last year for about $132,000. Gosh, I guess I really only have one question after learning about this. If someone uses this polish, will the manicure still chip off like other nail polishes? I assume it will, and if it does, you might accidentally leave a trail of diamonds in your path. I can’t wait to find out who buys this!

North Carolina Sewer Monster (Warning Gross)

UPDATE: Reddit user nemutaineko found the answear:

'Creature' A Colony of Worms, Officials Say

Ed Buchan, environmental coordinator at the Raleigh Public Utilities Department, told the news outlet that staff biologists had confirmed that the oddity was a colony of worms. The colonies attach themselves to roots that slowly work their way into weak points in the pipes.
Their movement, he suggested, was a response to the heat from the camera's light. "They seem to respond to the light from the camera," Buchan said. "That light is pretty hot."He said the worms live in sewage and pond sediment, but he hadn't seen them in the sewer before."We were surprised. We didn't know immediately what it was," he said. But he added that the worm colonies, bizarre though they may appear, don't pose problems for the city's water quality. "You want to try to keep the pipe as clear as possible regardless of what's in there," Buchan said.
"On the other hand, it doesn't seem to be causing any blockage."But a biology professor with the North Carolina State University told News14 it might not be a colony of worms but something else."I think it's a colony of bryozoans," Kwak said. "They are small animals like a hydra that live together in colonies, and they stick out tentacles to feed. And when they're disturbed, they withdraw into small tubes that they've built."

The Real- Life Science Behind Star Trek Technology [Infographic]

We all know that technology advances fast, but do you realize how fast? If you look at what we are able to do today compared to just two or three years ago, well, it’s nuts. Think about it, the first generation of the iPhone was released five years ago this month. Doesn’t it seem like we’ve had iPhones longer than that? How did we ever live without smartphones in the first place?
Scientists are also working on some mind boggling things that will soon be real, like augmented reality contact lenses. Microsoft has even developed the world’s first Universal Translator (or as close to it as we’ll get right now since we don’t communicate with people of other species yet). It’s an exciting time, and it’s easy to fall behind the latest developments. I suppose that is one reason why I can’t break away from my laptop for very long.

What is causing the waves in California to glow?

The phenomenon has been observed on a semi-regular basis since at least 1901 along the beaches around San Diego, Calif. By day the algal blooms give the water a soupy red coloration, which is why they're often referred to as a red tide. But unlike some forms of red tide that can be toxic to people and marine life, the glowing blooms occurring in San Diego waters are reportedly harmless.
For surfers who don't mind catching a wave in water teeming with a sludge of microorganisms, the glowing ocean offers the chance of a lifetime. Night swimmers also often delight in the opportunity to lounge in a bioluminescent sea. The organisms can also be present in wet beach sand, so even beach walkers can watch as the ground sparkles with every footstep.
Several videos posted on YouTube show the majestic effects of the phenomenon. Watch below as a surfer sets a wave aflame and a kayaker dazzles through calmer waters while the coastal city lights shine in the background.

10 Of The Strangest Unclaimed Airline Baggage Items Ever Found

You've probably heard of the Unclaimed Baggage Center in Alabama. It's where all lost suitcases that are never reunited with their owners end up. This makes it both the world's most amazing thrift store and a collection of pretty weird stuff. A recent mental_floss article rounded up ten of the strangest (and most valuable) things they've found.
1. Hoggle from the movie "Labyrinth." Yes. Someone checked the orignal puppet.
2. A Gucci suitcase filled with ancient Egyptian artifacts.
3. A rattlesnake. Yes. A snake on a plane.
4. A $250,000 guidance system belonging to the U.S. Navy.
5. A Barbie doll stuffed with $500 in cash. Best. Birthday. Ever.
6. A suit of armor. Stupid TSA probably wouldn't let the owner wear it in the cabin during the flight, as planned.
7. A 300-year-old violin. Has Dave Carroll taught us nothing? Don't check your valuable musical instruments!
8. An ordinary-looking sock, which contained a 5.8-carat diamond set in a platinum ring.
9. A camera designed for the Space Shuttle. NASA flies commercial?
10. A 40.95-carat natural emerald.

Toilet Paper Roll Faces: The Creepiest Use Of A Toilet Paper Roll Ever

Everyone knows that when the toilet paper is out, danger is approaching. Well, let’s just say that we all know we would rather have a spare toilet paper roll at home than realize it’s out when it’s too late. I remember when I was in preschool, and we were asked to bring empty toilet paper rolls to school. At first I was, as most of the kids were, clueless as to what was going to happen. But then it quickly dawned on us that we were going to create all kinds of cool stuff with these cardboard things. We made ornaments for the  Christmas tree, maracas, yeah you name it, we could do pretty much anything with them. As time progressed, the use of a toilet paper roll somewhat fell into the shadows of our daily chores. We no longer saw the potential in them, and that’s way sad.
A guy that certainly doesn’t see the limits, yet sees the possibilities with an empty toilet paper roll is designer Junior Fritz Jacquiet. He calls himself a paper sculptor and boy are his creations awesome. Most of us would just put a couple of eyes, a nose and a mouth on the roll by using a pen. At max we’d add some yarn hair to it as well. But Fritz has a style all his own that will not only thrill you, but creep you out as well.
Fritz uses them as they are, adding a little color and then folding them to make fantastic faces. Each one is as unique as the next. I am just amazed by the creativity he shows in all his toilet paper roll faces. It’s astonishing to think that these faces where all hidden in a plain, boring and gray toilet paper roll awaiting discovery. This is art when at its best.

Radioactive uranium sculptures

By at 10:15 am Monday, Aug 6

Australian artists Ken and Julia Yonetani created a series of sculptures from radioactive uranium glass. The large artworks, including the chandelier above and a 6-meter green ant, will be unveiled this week at the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art in Sydney, Australia. The artists were inspired by the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The show is titled "What the Birds Knew," which was the alternative title for Kurosawa's film "I Live In Fear," about the fear of nuclear war. According to the press release, "Modern uranium, or "Vaseline" glass is typically only up to maximum 2% uranium by weight. This is not sufficiently radioactive to pose a health hazard to those viewing the glass."

Hey -- so I'm dealing with some real life stuff today. If I disappear after an article or two take comfort in the fact I'm suffering and I'll try to make it up to you with some posts this weekend (or so I say).
Headphone purveyor SOL REPUBLIC has teamed up with Meowingtons (who makes....?) to produce this very limited edition (only 10!) of cat headphones. They cost $1,000 and you should expect to be mauled the first time you try to put them on your cat. All proceeds (if there are any) will go to the ASPCA, which is awesome. Anything to keep those Sarah McLachlan commercials off television.

Fabric made from wine

What if you could combine your love of fashion and your love of wine? Soon, the Wine Harlots fantasy would be a reality. Micro‘be’ Fermented Fashion is the creation of Donna Franklin and Gary Cass who have made fabric from wine. The material is made from wine which when acetobacter is introduced creates cellulose on the surface of the wine. The fabric is similar to cotton. The cellulose is draped on a model, forms to fit and provides a seamless custom-fit garment. The issue with mainstream usability right now is when the fabric is dry it’s fragile, and easy torn – but when that problem is resolved, Wine Harlots will be queuing up to buy a glass – I mean a dress!

This is a Research Facility That Can Melt Diamonds, Not a CG Scene

Sandia National Laboratories' Z machine sounds like it belongs in a James Bond movie more than it does an Albuquerque research facility. Based on what it can do, that's not as far-fetched as it seems. What you see isn't the handiwork of some electric spider -- it's what you witness in the immediate fraction of a second after the Z's electromagnetic pulse kicks in and forks of lightning burst across the 108-foot distance inside. The pulse in question is key to Sandia's studies of fusion and the effect of very intense magnetic pressures on materials that normally refuse to change states. Even in 2006, the Z was putting out pressure more than 10 million times that of the atmosphere, and it successfully melted diamond at roughly half that strength. It goes without saying that we don't want to be anywhere near this kind of energy when scientists flick the switch, but we're glad to see that something so pretty and deadly can help us understand physics.

Congress officially bans Westboro Baptist Church from protesting military funerals.

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church were quick to react on Twitter, in their typical, hate-filled language, to the news that Congress passed a bill that would limit the group's activities. The Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012 includes a measure that bans the picketing of military funerals two hours before or after a service. It was a response to a 2011 Supreme Court ruling that said the church's activities were protected by the First Amendment.

Did you know there are wild birds in Australia that can mimic the sound of cameras, car alarms, and chainsaws.

A Lyrebird is either of two species of ground-dwelling Australian birds, that form the genus, Menura, and the family Menuridae. They are most notable for their superb ability to mimic natural and artificial sounds from their environment. Lyrebirds have unique plumes of neutral coloured tailfeathers.
Lyrebirds are among Australia's best-known native birds. As well as their extraordinary mimicking ability, lyrebirds are notable because of the striking beauty of the male bird's huge tail when it is fanned out in display; and also because of their courtship display.

Sleeping Positions Say More About You Than You Know [Infographic]

Link to Infograph

The least desirable position to sleep in is… yeah you guessed it, on your stomach. That has all the effects that sleeping on your back prevents, so you might reconsider if you like sleeping on your stomach. Furthermore, you will find that it is much easier to fall asleep if you sleep on your back since you have free access to air and your body isn’t smothered by pillows, blankets or even yourself.
In England, the most common sleeping position is to have either an arm or a leg sticking out under the blanket. What is your favorite position and do you think you could ever improve it? The thing with sleeping positions is that it is really hard to change it since we usually position ourselves in it while we are actually sleeping. It’s in our subconscious, and it happens naturally because it’s how our body feels it’s the most comfortable for us.
However, with a little help, you can probably change it to a more optimized and healthier choice of sleeping position. Then of course, sleep can be affected by a lot of things that don’t necessarily have anything to do with the sleeping position we take when we wall asleep. Stress, worries and a whole lot of other factors play a crucial part in how well we sleep. Have a look at this infographic and see if you can identify your own position, and by doing so, maybe increase your hours of healthy sleep instead of continuously wasting sleep in a bad sleeping position.

Mosquitoes bugging you while you’re taking your afternoon nap? Johannes Vogl has come up with a solution, but it seems like something that might do more harm than good when it’s in the wrong hands: the Mosquito Flamethrower. Vogl actually came up with it last 2005, but it’s making the rounds once again thanks to the BugASalt.
Despite its extreme nature, the Mosquito Flamethrower seems like the more humane alternative compared to the BugASalt. Note that the latter kills the targeted insects by shooting tiny salt pellets right at them–and right into their eyes. Sounds like a painful way to die, doesn’t it? On the other hand, one zap with the Flamethrower will incinerate those bad guys so fast that they won’t know what hit them. Heck, they won’t even have time to feel the pain because they’ll be dead and gone in an instant.

Danny was celebrating his birthday with family and friends at the Deschutes Brew Pub [GW's note: GREAT PLACE FOR A KID'S BIRTHDAY!] in Portland on July 18 when the cast of characters from Star Wars came in to say hello.
Rob, dressed in a hooded Jedi knight outfit, walked behind the other characters, removed his hood and saw his son for the first time in a year.
